Why the build date matters

Almost every repair-or-replace decision comes down to age. A five-year-old refrigerator with a failed fan motor is an easy repair. The same failure on a fifteen-year-old unit usually is not. Knowing the build date turns a guess into a decision.

It also tells you whether to call the manufacturer instead of us. Most appliances carry one year on parts and labor, and sealed-system parts on refrigerators are often covered five to ten years. If yours is still covered, use it — we will say so.

Common questions

Where do I find the serial number on my appliance?
Look for a tag or sticker inside the door, along the door frame, behind the bottom kick plate, or on the back. On a washer it is often under the lid; on a refrigerator, along the inside wall near the crisper.
What does the serial number actually tell me?
The build date. That is the single most useful fact when deciding whether to repair, because it tells you where the appliance sits in its expected lifespan and whether any manufacturer coverage could still apply.
How long is a typical appliance warranty?
Most manufacturers cover one year on parts and labor from the purchase date. Sealed-system components on refrigerators often carry five to ten years. Build date is not the same as purchase date, so treat the decoded date as the earliest possible start.
What if my appliance is still under warranty?
Then you should use it. We will tell you so and point you to the manufacturer rather than charge you for a repair you can get covered.
Do you need the model number too?
For a repair, yes. The model number is what lets us look up the exact part before we come out, which is often the difference between a one-visit repair and a two-visit one.
