Nearly every call starts the same way. Somebody describes what the machine is doing, and then, before I have said one word about a part, they ask the real question: is this even worth fixing?
It deserves better than “well, it depends.” So here is the way I actually decide, in the order I decide it. You can run most of it yourself before I ever pull up to the house.
The short version
I need two numbers and one part name.
- How old the machine is, measured against how long that kind of machine is built to last.
- What the repair comes to, measured against what a comparable new one costs.
- The name of the part that failed, because a wear item and a major component are two completely different decisions.
Get those three and the answer is usually obvious. Most of the time it comes out repair. Sometimes it genuinely does not, and I will get to those.
Number one: how old is it, really
Not “how long have you had it.” A lot of machines in Stark County came with the house. The build date is usually decodable from the serial number on the door jamb, the tub rim or the back panel, and it is worth knowing before you spend anything.
Here is roughly how long each kind lasts in the homes I work in:
- Ranges and ovens. The survivors. A gas range built twenty years ago is a simple machine and many are still going. Something built in the last five years, with a touch panel and a control board, I would not count on for nearly as long.
- Dryers. Still the simplest machine in the house and the cheapest to keep alive — the parts that fail on them are among the least expensive on my van. Older ones ran fifteen years without complaint. Newer ones are shorter-lived, but they are also the ones most worth repairing, because the failures are small.
- Refrigerators. This is where the drop is sharpest. A fridge from the nineties running today is not unusual. A fridge built now, with a linear compressor and a board managing everything, is a different machine with a shorter horizon. The sealed system is still the ceiling either way; everything bolted around it is normal repair territory.
- Washers. The shortest-lived of the group now. Front-load or top-load matters less than how many loads a week it has been pushing, and less than it used to matter at all — the machines simply are not built the way they were.
- Dishwashers — 9 to 12 years. Shortest span of the group. Hard water shortens it further, and plenty of homes around here run a softener for a reason.
I am not going to give you a chart of expected lifespans, because the honest answer is that the numbers moved. If you had asked me ten years ago how long an appliance lasts, I would have given you roughly double what I would tell you today. They are not built the way they were. That is not nostalgia — it is what I see across roughly 800 refrigerators, 790 washers, 730 dryers, 360 dishwashers and 200 ovens and ranges in my own records since 2019.
The useful cut: if a machine is under half its expected life, fix it. Almost without exception. A six-year-old dryer or a five-year-old refrigerator has years of ordinary service in front of it, and one failed part does not change that. Past the halfway mark, the part name starts doing the deciding.
The part name matters more than the age
Every failure I see falls into one of two buckets, and homeowners are rarely told which bucket they are in.
Wear items. Parts the manufacturer expects to be replaced during the machine’s life:
- Drain pumps, water inlet valves, door latches and lid switches
- Belts, drive couplers, rollers and idler pulleys
- Heating elements, thermal fuses, igniters and thermostats
- Defrost heaters, evaporator fans, thermistors and ice makers
These exist as service parts on purpose. Most of these repairs land in the $167 to $400 range including parts and labor, and I will put one in a twelve-year-old dryer without hesitating. A machine that needs a wear item is not a machine at the end of its life. It is a machine doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Major components. The expensive, labor-heavy ones:
- The sealed system on a refrigerator — compressor, evaporator, or a refrigerant leak
- The transmission or stator on a top-load washer
- The bearing and spider assembly on a front-loader, which means splitting the tub
- The main control board on certain models
This is where the age question stops being academic. But one warning about that last item: the control board gets blamed far more often than it fails. A board is only guilty if someone has measured that it is not sending power where it should. On a washer that will not drain, for instance, reading 120 volts at a pump that is sitting there doing nothing settles it in ten seconds — the board is fine, the pump is not. A board quote taken without that kind of measurement is a guess, and it is an expensive guess to accept.
Number two: the repair against what replacing actually costs
A new machine in the same class as what most people around here own runs $700 to $1,200. That is the sticker. The number you actually pay usually also includes delivery, haul-away of the old one, and now and then a new vent kit, cord or set of hoses.
And the new machine has its own first failure somewhere ahead of it, on the manufacturer’s warranty terms and the manufacturer’s schedule rather than yours.
Against that, most of what I do lands in the $167 to $400 range, parts and labor, quoted as a flat number before any work starts.
So the rule I use is this:
- Repair costs under half of a comparable new machine, and the appliance still has real life left? Fix it. This covers the large majority of what I get called out for.
- Repair crosses half of new, and the machine is past about two-thirds of its expected life? That is where replacing starts to be the honest answer.
Note that both conditions have to be true. An expensive repair on a young machine is still usually worth doing, and a cheap repair on an old machine almost always is.
When I will tell you not to fix it
This is the part most people expect a repair company to leave out, so here it is plainly. These are the calls where I put my meter away and tell you to go shopping.
- A sealed-system failure on a budget refrigerator past about twelve years. The work is real work, and on a cabinet already near the end of its span the money lands too close to a new machine to justify.
- Two major components failed at once. A control board and a sealed system on the same ten-year-old unit. Either might be arguable on its own. Together, no.
- A front-loader needing the bearing and spider assembly at ten years or more. Splitting the tub is hours of labor plus a heavy part, spent on a machine that is nearly out of runway anyway.
- Structural damage. A cracked outer tub, a split refrigerator liner, a rusted-through cabinet or oven cavity, or flood and rodent damage run through the wiring harness. The parts may be available. The machine around them is the problem.
- The part no longer exists. On older and off-brand machines this happens more than you would think. If it cannot be sourced, no amount of diagnostic skill changes the outcome.
In every one of those cases I tell you at the visit, charge the service call, and leave. Nobody gets talked into a repair. Getting an honest read is the entire reason to have somebody look at it.
The one option I will never point you at
If replacing really is the answer, buy new. I will not send you after a used machine, and I want to be clear about why, because the used one always looks like the smart money.
A used appliance comes with no service history, no warranty, and no way of knowing which part is closest to going. You are buying somebody else’s unsolved problem, and the reason they parted with it is information you will never have. I have been called out to plenty of them within weeks of the sale.
Compare that with the machine already sitting in your laundry room. You know how it has been treated, you know exactly what failed, and after a repair it has one known-new part in it and a written record of the work. That is a far better-known quantity than anything on a marketplace listing.
“It will just break again anyway”
Fair worry, and it deserved more than my opinion, so I counted. Across 3,029 machines in my records, 98.75% of repairs held — the machine did not come back inside a month. When a repaired machine did need something else, the median gap was 182 days, and it was a different part on a different day.

Running it on your own machine
Find the age. Find out whether the failed part is a wear item or a major component. Then weigh the number against $700 to $1,200 and the halfway rule above. Three steps, and two of them you can do standing in front of the machine.
