E2 Is Only Half a Code: What the Other Half Turned Out to Be

E2 on its own is not a fault code. On Whirlpool-family machines — Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and most Kenmore — the display alternates between an F number and an E number. The F says which system, the E says what went wrong inside it. E2 is the back half of a sentence.

That matters because F5 E2, F6 E2, F2 E2 and F8 E2 are four different repairs at four different prices. If all you have written down is “E2”, go back and watch the display through a full flash cycle and get the F number too.

What the E2s actually were, seven times

Here is what these turned out to be on my last seven, setting aside F3 E2 on washers, which I have written about separately because it is its own thing.

  • Three of seven were dishwashers — F2 E2, F8 E2, FA E2 — and every one came back to a board. User interface or main control. Two of those three owners looked at the number and bought a new dishwasher instead.
  • Two of seven were washers showing F6 E2, and both times the fault was at the user interface end, not the main control.
  • One was F5 E2 on a washer that had started struggling to lock and unlock the lid. Lid lock assembly.
  • One was not a Whirlpool at all. A Midea top-loader throwing a bare E2 when it tried to drain, which on that brand is a drain fault and has nothing to do with communication. Drain pump.

That last one is the whole point in one job. The same two characters mean completely different things on different machines. Read the badge on the door before you read anything on the internet.

Pull the power first — and know what the result means

On anything in this family, unplug the machine or pull its breaker for five minutes, then power it up and run a short cycle. That is free and it is worth doing before you call anyone.

What matters is what happens next, and this is the part people get wrong:

  • Clears and stays clear for weeks. You had a genuine one-off. Get on with your life.
  • Clears and comes back in a few days. The fault is real. The reset is not fixing it, it is hiding it, and every cycle you run in the meantime is a cycle the machine is running with a failing connection.
  • Does not clear at all. Something is hard-failed. That is not necessarily bad news — the hard failures are usually easier to pin down than the intermittent ones.

While you are there, look at whether the console has been getting wet. Detergent and bleach vapor sitting up under a washer console will corrode a board’s edge connector long before the board itself goes bad, and a dishwasher that has had a leak above it has the same problem.

A board is not always either working or scrap

Of the two F6 E2 washers, one needed a new user interface. The other did not. That board was intact; its connections had corroded. I cleaned it up, sealed it, and the washer went back to work with no part at all.

I told that owner exactly what they were getting: it might come back, the replacement interface was on a long backorder anyway, and this way they had a working washer today and a decision to make later if it recurred. That is a real option and it is worth asking for. Nobody should be quoting you a board without having actually looked at the one in the machine.

The dishwasher group is the one to be careful about

F2 E2, F8 E2 and FA E2 on a dishwasher are the expensive end of this code, and here is how I separate a component failure from a board failure on them.

On one of those three, every component I tested read in spec or very close to it. Individually, nothing looked bad enough to condemn. What settled it was that the parts throwing faults all shared one circuit on the control board — that common denominator is the tell. When several unrelated components misbehave and the only thing they have in common is where they land on the board, the board is the fault, not any of them.

That reading is what stops you replacing three good parts one at a time. It is also what tells you honestly when the repair is not worth doing.

What it costs

A lid lock, a drain pump or a user interface on a washer generally lands in the $167 to $400 range with parts and labor. A dishwasher control board can push past the top of that, and on an older dishwasher I will say plainly when the number stops making sense against a new machine. Two of the three above heard that from me and replaced the dishwasher, which was the right call.
